Issues regarding the existence throughout history of both the mythical Troy and the ancient city which travelers, cartographers and archaeologists described are presented. A discussion of the key archaeologists who have worked on the site starting with its discovery by Heinrich Schliemann in 1871 is given.

The wishful thinking of the British antiquarian Arthur Evans as the origin of the legend that the bull-leaping fresco at the Cretan palace of Knossos portrays the legendary Minotaur is discussed. Evans made a major error by denying the influence of the Egyptian religion on the Minoans.

Article Abstract:
A 2,300-year-old shipwreck discovered between the classical trading centers of Rhodes and Alexandria is described. This shipwreck, and other possibly ancient ones lying nearby, challenges the traditional assumption that ancient sailors could not sail long distances across open water.
