A case study of the north Indian region of Ladakh describes about the everyday household objects and goods traded between distant communities, helping to gain a new perspective on cultural contact and interaction. It provides an insight into the different cultural perspectives of those involved in the trade and the complex meanings they give to these commodities.

Kalighat paintings from nineteenth century Calcutta in Maxwell Sommerville's "ethnological East Indian collection."

Article Abstract:

Kalighat paintings from 19th century Calcutta in the collection assembled by Maxwell Sommerville, a publishing magnate who travelled and collected extensively from the 1860s on, are discussed. Kalighat art began as inexpensive pilgrimage and tourist souvenirs from the Kali temple area. In the early 20th century these were gradually upgraded to art.
