The search for settlements on the Great Sage Plain

Article Abstract:

A number of analytical tools have been used to study the 13th century Pueblo settlements in Mesa Verde and Castle Rock in Colorado to determine shifts in the community arrangements of these Native Americans. Research has focused on the fauna remains found in the dwellings, tree-ring dating of the wood used, analysis of the clay used in the pottery and the placement of the dwellings. The density of the settlements increased over time, and people eventually moved from the mesas to canyon locations.

Plain of jars

Article Abstract:

The French archaeologist Madeleine Colani pioneered research in Xieng Khouang in the 1930's and found jars with cremated human remains and a nearby cave with burned bones and ash. She speculated the cave was a crematorium, the jars were mortuary vessels and the fields were ancient cemeteries and about 2,000 jars are identified across the province.

A night camp at the temple of Preah Khan is described. The temple was built in 1191 by King Jayavarman VII.
