Asherah, the most important goddess in the Canaanite pantheon, is known from the immense library of thirteenth-century cuneiform tablets found in Syria at the site of Ugrait. The passages from the Asherah in the Old Testament reflect both the Worship of Asherah and efforts to stamp out her cult in the Iron Age.
