Tales from the archives

Article Abstract:

The records and documents of the AIA, amounting to sixty boxes collected during the past 113 years, were improperly maintained but are now being conserved. After conservation they are to be stored in acid-free containers and placed in Boston University's Stone Science Library. The papers contain information on lecture programs, annual meetings, and inaugurations of societies. The AIA archives also have a photograph of archaeologist Herbert Fletcher De Cou and numerous letters and telegrams related to his murder, gathered during excavations at the ancient city of Cyrene, Libya in 1910.

Memorable meetings

Article Abstract:

The annual International Symposium of Excavations, Surveys, and Archaeometry provides a model of efficiency in both the meeting itself and the publication of proceedings. The General Directorate of Monuments and Museums of Turkey requires all who receive permits for archaeological research to present their work at the symposium. The published proceedings thus serve as an annual report on Turkish archaeology. The 15th annual symposium, held in 1993, included representatives of 15 different nationalities.
