Sterling Dow, 1903-1995

Article Abstract:

Sterling Dow, Professor of History and Archaeology at Harvard University, died on Jan. 9, 1995 at age 92. Dow was born in Portland, ME, and was a member of Harvard College's class of 1925. He received his doctorate degree from the University in 1936 and worked as Tutor and Instructor from 1936-1941 and as Assoc. Prof. from 1941-1946. He became the John E. Hudson Professor of Archaeology in 1949 and held the position until his retirement in 1970. He is best remembered by his students for his uncanny ability to bring wit and humor to the study of archaeology and by his peers for his valuable contributions to archaeological research.

Massimo Pallottino, 1909-1995

Article Abstract:

Massimo Pallottino was considered as the dean and modern founder of Etruscan studies. Etruscan studies became an independent field mainly because of his book 'Etruscologia.' Although he was regarded as Italy's greatest living archaeologist, Pallottino preferred to be known as a historian of ancient Italy. He was the president of the Istituto di Studi Etruschi ed Italici and was an Honorary Foreign Member of the Archaeological Institute of America. He died in his sleep in Feb. 7, 1995. He was 85 years old.

James Bennett Pritchard, 1909-1997

Article Abstract:

Biblical archaeologist James Bennett Pritchard died on Jan 1, 1997. Pritchard, who served as president of the Archaeological Institute of America from 1972 to 1973, was born on Oct 4, 1909, in Louisville, KY. Aside from curating and teaching, Pritchard did significant fieldwork in Sarafand, Lebanon, and in el Jib and Tell es-Sa'idiyeh, Jordan, covering the Early Bronze Age to the Byzantine period.
