Article Abstract:
Singer-songwriters have frequently been considered synonymous with the genre of "folk" artist or folk musician since at least the middle of the 1960s, with numerous record labels and staged festivals having been shared by the two categories. It has been implied by some scholars that a substantial number of commercial artists who have claimed to be folk artists are appropriating the designation erroneously. A selection of music written by singer-songwriters on the Philo and Flying Fish recording labels between 1987-1995 are evaluated.

Topic Records is the most influential of all recording companies which have contributed to the music revival trend. It begun recording 78 rpm records in 1939 and concentrated later on traditional music and the revival of Irish and British folk music. Topic reissued much of its original records into CDs during the 1990s. This move has resulted in the release of a great number of CDs which document the relationship of traditional and revival music.
