Rome's celebrating the year 2000 by creating a grand archaeological park is described, as well as the pope declaring it a jubilee year. Archaeological projects include the restoration and reopening of a wing of the Domus Aurea, the restoration of the Colosseum, Museo Nazionale Romano, and the drilling of the city's most deeply buried layers to look for traces of the earliest city.

Shipwrecks dating from as early as 200 B.C. have yielded new information on ancient Rome. While some of the vessels reveal construction techniques not previously seen, others provide data on the region's social and political climates. Most were workboats for local ferrying or running errands, while others were cargo ships that offer examples of cultural trade.
