Rebuilding the monuments of Pericles

Article Abstract:

Restoration teams in Athens are laboring to reclaim the ancient structures of the Acropolis from the ravages of human destruction, acid rain, time, and previous restoration efforts. Nikolaos Balanos inserted iron clamps and beams to shore up the buildings between 1895 and the late 1930s; those are now rusting and swelling, cracking the stone. The work includes sections of the Erectheion, the Parthenon, and the Propoylaia. The Temple of Athena will be dismantled and reassembled, possibly inside a protective glass shell.

Turkey's Sephardic heritage

Article Abstract:

Balat was for centuries the Jewish center in Istanbul, and therefore in Turkey. Recently the Quincentennial Foundation restored some of the quarter's old synagogues to celebrate the exodus of Spain's Sephardic Jews to Turkey, an event still celebrated in songs and poetry. Among the synagogues refurbished are the Ahrida, internationally famous for its beauty, built in 1453 and rebuilt in the 17th century; and the Yambol, which features a landscape on its ceiling.

British museum to get Icklingham bronzes

Article Abstract:

Sixteen bronze icons stolen from the ruined Roman temple in Icklingham, in Suffolk, England, are to be donated to the British Museum by Leon Levy of New York, a private collector of Roman and Greek antiquities. The images were discovered in 1982 and later stolen from Britain before they were sold to Levy in the US.
