Article Abstract:
The 14th-century Frankish settlement of Agios Vasilios in southern Greece has been reconstructed by computer imaging, and the settlement pattern has been analyzed using a geographic information system (GIS). The settlement was established by European crusaders, referred to as Franks by the Greeks, who took over the Byzantine empire following the fall of Constantinople in 1204. An architectural and topographic survey in 1991-1992 provided information for the computer-assisted design (CAD) reconstruction. The GIS database has been used to predict the location of other Frankish settlements and for cross-cultural comparison of land-use patterns.

Excavations at Gede, a walled Swahili city founded in the 14th century in Gede, Kenya, are discussed. Gede may have been a residential settlement for absentee landowners from a nearby trading port. The political climate of the coast determined its fortunes, and final destruction came from hostile Somali nomads in the early 17th century.
