Project Sting: the latest tactic in the war on illegal artifact trading is paying off in federal convictions and a flood of information about dealers and their clients

Article Abstract:

The National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management have been conducting undercover sting operations to combat the trade in stolen artifacts from the Southwestern US and Mexico. Records left by a dealer who committed suicide provided a number of leads, prompting the undercover investigation. Over 4,000 artifacts have been recovered. Archaeologist Judy Reed is one of the National Park Service employees working on the project, which is now being discontinued.
