Prince of the Great Kurgan

Article Abstract:

The first complete Scythian chieftain's tomb was excavated near Ryzhanovka, 75 miles south of Kiev, Ukraine, in 1996. Radiocarbon dating and stylistic analysis of artifacts place the tomb's date within the third century BCE, raising questions about the dates attributed to other tombs in the area. The findings suggest that the Scythians did not die out after their defeat by Phillip II in 339BCE, but continued to rule in the northern edge of the region, adopting a more agrarian lifestyle.
