Article Abstract:

Alison Frantz has been the premiere photographer of late classical Greek sites and antiquities of the past 50 years, as well as a conservator and author. From 1939 to 1964 she was the photographer for the American School of Classical Studies' excavations in the Athenian Agora. Insisting on 'truth before beauty,' she sought to most truly reveal the the art or architecture itself rather than impose her own vision. Accuracy and honesty have always been her touchstones. Now 91, she lives in Princeton, NJ.

Photographer Chris Rainier seeks out power places, especially archaeological sites that are decaying and being absorbed by nature. Rainier's work belongs to the tradition of travel photography rather than to the precise documentation of archaeological photography. His books include 'Keepers of the Spirit' and 'Where Masks Still Dance,' a study of New Guinean traditional culture.

The genius of Felix Bonfils; rare images of the monuments of ancient Athens by a nineteenth-century virtuoso

Article Abstract:

Photographs of ancient Athens by the 19th century photographer Felix Bonfils are described. Bonfils' work, of sites around the eastern Mediterranean, also included Jerusalem, Egypt, and Syria. The photographs show the most important stops on a traveler's itinerary 125 years ago and are documents of 19th century cultural history.
