Mystery monasteries: boyhood curiosity leads to a career studying Moscow's oldest and least understood church buildings

Article Abstract:

An opportunity for archaeological study of the monasteries of Moscow, Russia, occurred between 1983 and 1993, before the sites were reclaimed by the church. Excavations were conducted at Danilov Monastery, the Monastery of the Epiphany and the Monastery of Peter the Metropolitan. The church has since barred further archaeological research at the sites and is undertaking renovation or rebuilding without archaeological oversight. There is little written documentation concerning the monasteries' history, so the preliminary work that was done was valuable in correcting some misconceptions.

Boyhood dreams

Article Abstract:

Reading true adventure stories gave a young boy dreams of becoming an archaeologist, dreams that still survive after retirement, as a tribute to the lure of the ancient past. The boy, growing up in the Bronx, started digging around in an undeveloped area near his home, uncovering treasures such as a rusted out carriage lantern, some old coins and a stone that turned out to be an Indian hunting stone. The boy went on to become a writer and editor but maintained his interest in archaeology and visited many fascinating sites in the Middle East.
