Museum under siege: attacked and looted by warring factions, Afghanistan's National Museum has now been stripped of 70 percent of its collections

Article Abstract:

Afghanistan's National Museum in Darulaman has lost an estimated 70% of its valuable collections to looting and has twice been hit by rockets. The museum was relatively intact after the Soviet occupation, but the situation has deteriorated rapidly since then as rival mujahideen factions have fought against one another. Some 16 trunks containing artifacts were removed to safety by the government but the precise inventory is unknown. Some pieces from the museum have surfaced on the international art market.
