Archaeology is making progress on Malta, including a plan for rebuilding the National Museum of Archaeology, efforts to protect the island's World Heritage Sites and the development of a strong academic program in archaeology at the University of Malta, which initiated advanced degree offerings in 1995. Malta's museums still display antiquities collected in the 17th century by Gian Francesco Abela of the Knights of St. John, while early 20th-century excavations by Themistocles Zammit earned him the title of 'father of Maltese prehistory.'

Jewelry repatriated

Article Abstract:

Ancient jewelry from the Sipan region of Peru has been returned to the Peruvian government by US Customs. Sotheby's had intended to offer the artifacts for auction. Peru's government requested their return but was refused. The Cultural Property Implementation Act (1990), forbidding artifacts from Sipan entry into the United States, permitted seizure of the jewelry and its return to Peru.
