In search of Anau's past

Article Abstract:

Geologist Raphael Pumpelly led two scientific expeditions at the Central Asian site of Anau in 1903 and 1904. The expeditions which were participated in by a team that included a botanist, a zoologist, a geomorphologist and an archaeologist led to a pathbreaking study of farming using archaeological remains. A review of Pumpelly's work in Anau, now part of Turkmenistan, led to a search for the artefacts from the two expeditions. The search would prove fruitless until an archival trove of papers recording Pumpelly's activities during the two expeditions were discovered in New Hampshire.
