Article Abstract:
Studies of rock art and a settlement at the La Aleta site in the Dominican Republic's East National Park are expected to provide new information about the Taino people and their response to the arrival of the Spanish. Four plazas have been found at La Aleta, as well as a ceremonial cenote with well-preserved ceremonial objects. The rock art includes paintings from the time of the conquest. The Taino culture became extinct by 1525 as a result of war and disease.

Article Abstract:
'Christopher Columbus: The Discovery' is a movie that takes dreadful liberties with historical and archeological reality. Its most dramatic moments are drawn from a fictionalized biography, the film routinely ignores the real Columbus's flat statements, and the native islanders are presented in a grossly simplistic and condescending manner. The movie had the support of the Spanish Quincentenary Commission and respected scholars, but lacks all credibility.
