Article Abstract:

A number of intellectuals in the field of archaeology during the 18th century held different views regarding the ethics associated with archaeological excavations, such as those at Pompeii and Herculaneum. Sir William Hamilton, British envoy at the Court of Naples in Italy and a strong critic of the excavations, believed that the methods used by workmen in the diggings were erroneous, although his own behavior was sometimes inconsistent with the views he expressed to others.
