Folklore studies applied to health

Article Abstract:

The applied folklorist has a key place in the medical patient's experience of health care as a cultural activity. Spiritual issues are crucially important to dying patients and their families, so the folklorist can bring a counterpoint to institutionalized religion's teachings on the subject. In studying belief, folklorists should first consider the unofficial belief to be true. The proper role of the folklorist is that of a helpful subversive.

Theory as practice: some dialectics of generality and specificity in folklore scholarship

There is ongoing dialectic between theory and data, especially in the area of folklore research. The recognition of "metatheory" helps scholars understand how they have reached the location intellectual history has led them. New data will almost certainly emerge that will provide a deeper, richer context for old theory.
