Article Abstract:

The concept of folk culture and cultural identity in the middle ages was largely shaped by the economic and territorial changes of the times. Folk identities or labels were often ascribed by feudal leaders in an effort to maintain traditional power structures. Further study of historical folk culture assessments could shed light on modern research concerning identity and culture.
