Article Abstract:

The presentation of folk culture at provincial exhibitions in Austria is an important aspect of the administration of heritage and cultural management but is also problematic. The role of folk culture is separate from the rest of the exhibitions' aspects. Austria's nine provinces present their own cultural heritage and create cultural identity through organizing various provincial exhibitions.

Re-creating and re-imagining folk performing arts in contemporary Japan

Article Abstract:

The folk performing arts in Japan are in the process of changing as policies for administering them diversify. Folk performing arts are either treated as traditional and regional culture preserved and applied in accordance with the Cultural Properties Protection Law, or they are categorized as touristic resources, covered by laws regarding the revitalization of tourism.

Photographers Jeffrey Becom and Sally Jean Aberg have concentrated on studies of Mediterranean Maya Mesoamerica. Fine art photographs of folk art open up rich new areas for students and scholars of vernacular architecture and folk art. The abstract color photographs of Becom and Aberg offer a new way to see traditional forms.
