Dilemma tales in the tale type index: the theme of joint efforts

Article Abstract:

'The Types of the Folktale,' a folktale indexing system, can become more descriptive with the addition of subdivisions representing subtypes. Attention must also be given to single episodes of multiple-part tales. While 'The Types of the Folktale' began as a simple way to record themes, it must be updated to reflect the detail of study given the subject. The theme of joint efforts is found in dilemma tales classified at AT 653 and AT 945. Single episodes are meaningful units in these tales.

Theory and practice of compiling a motif index, with the child corpus as example

Article Abstract:

Motif indexes, while difficult to construct, are indispensable to the folklore researcher searching for the description of corpora, genre, historical perspective or cultural comparison. The use of motif indexes will help the reader search for text and for interpretation. Compilation of the motif index to the Child corpus of English and Scottish popular ballads provides an example of theory and practice.

Article Abstract:

The 'Types of the Folktale and Motif-Index of Folk-Literature' are content-based and therefore endure as an indexing staple. Motif and tale type are categorized to answer the question, what happened? Therefore the characterizations and conceptualizations are content-oriented and will stand the test of time.
