Cambodia's Khmer past: an exhibition opening at the National Gallery highlights the cultural legacy of a war-torn country

Article Abstract:

Khmer sculpture is featured at an exhibition entitled 'Millennium of Glory: Sculpture of Angkor and Ancient Cambodia.' The exhibition of over 100 bronze and sandstone works from the seventh to sixteenth centuries AD is at the Grand Palais, Paris, France, until May 26, 1997, after which it moves to the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, June 29-Sept 28; then to the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum and Osaka Municipal Art Museum in Japan. There is some concern that the exhibition could encourage additional looting of sites in Cambodia, yet interest in the exhibition could also promote repatriation of plundered items.
