Article Abstract:
Excavations at Mount Independence, an early Revolutionary War garrison on the Vermont side of Lake Champlain, are providing information on the layout and provisioning of the camp, which was built before military procedures were standardized. Dwellings, lookout posts, a large dump, a blockhouse and a hospital are among the structures which have been excavated and analyzed. The encampment at Mount Independence covered 300 acres and was the largest northern fortification constructed especially for the Revolutionary War.

Article Abstract:
The belief that Eli Whitney invented the first gun with interchangeable parts in 1798 is no longer thought to be true. The dissembling of a Whitney gun in the 1960s by Edwin Battison showed that each component was hand filed and numbered, not uniform. An archaeological dig at the site of the Whitney factory in 1974 failed to find any evidence of the use of manufacturing machines to make muskets. Whitney is believed to have used the same technology as his competitors.
