Archaeology in Cyprus

Article Abstract:

Archaeological research in Cyprus has experienced phenomenal progress since the early 1970s. Following certain political events in 1974, Cypriot archaeological fieldwork increased to include such large-scale efforts as D. Christou's Kourion excavations and I. Todd's Vasilikos Valley Project launching. This growth has also led to a corresponding growth of the Cypriot economy, which is largely dependent on tourism. Unfortunately, the resurgence of tourism has increased the chances of disturbing important undiscovered archaeological sites.

Archeaology in Cyprus

Article Abstract:

Archeological research in Cyprus has made considerable progress since 1995. There are new projects being pursued, while reports on old work are being published. Furthermore, various conferences on Cypriot-related issues have been conducted in the Western world. However, Cyprus' archeological treasures are being threatened by unrestrained tourism and economic development. The state of Cypriot archeological research for the period 1994-96 is discussed.

Many happy returns? New contributions to the repatriation debate

Article Abstract:

Different countries continue to argue for the return of their cultural treasures which had been excavated and collected by foreign archaeological institutions. These countries are motivated mainly by pride in their heritage which have been subjugated by colonial powers. Among these culturally-significant objects, the easiest to recover are those with documentation concerning their origins.
