A tomb to wonder at

Article Abstract:

An excavation at Bodrum, Turkey, is providing new information about the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Many sketches of the monument have been based on a description given by Pliny, but ambiguities in the account have left many uncertainties. For example, excavators have established the exact dimensions of the base, which were incorrectly given by Pliny. The arrangement of sculptures on the monument is also being studied. Many of the sculptures were sent to the British Museum in the 19th century by Charles Newton, and their original placement on the tomb is difficult to determine.
