Companies that set up World Wide Web sites are vulnerable to satire, theft of symbols or graphics and other problems. Firms with registered trademarks or domain names are in a better position to guard against online incursions. Companies such as MicroPatent, Datalytics Inc., Maximized Software Inc. and APDI Inc. offer help in protecting intellectual property on the Web. Content theft threatens the credibility of online information, says APDI Pres Mark Burnett.

The Internet is changing rapidly into a showcase for three-dimensional Web content, and marketers and advertisers who do not keep up with this trend may find themselves woefully behind. In a short time, many Web sites will become three-dimensional, thanks to stand-alone virtual reality modeling language and 3-D software. Over 400 three-dimensional Web sites are online in 1998, up from about 30 sites in 1996.

Data mining, or finding transaction patterns between customers and products, can provide companies with useful demographic and purchasing information. Data mining allows firms to build attractive promotions and target specific clients for each type of product.
