Power to the people: competition was a foreign concept to electric companies

Article Abstract:

Electric companies are facing deregulation and will soon face an increase in competition among utilities, both private and public. In addition, these firms may be changed into separate power producers, power wholesalers and power transmitters. To ready themselves for more competition, many utilities are already focusing on streamlining their operations and researching ways to become more effective. Some are considering marketing household appliances to extent their business.

Blockbuster Entertainment Corp has developed a proprietary data base application program that locates potential Blockbuster video store sites by sorting through a wide variety of information. The customized program examines variables such as neighborhood demographics, the location of other Blockbuster sites, the location of other video stores, and the presence of traffic generating businesses in a neighorhood, then projects potential sales for a new Blockbuster at that site.

Developing consumer privacy policies helps companies allay customers' concerns and build productive client/company relationships. Policies should include full disclosure of how consumer data will be used, what benefits the customer will gain from sharing personal data, and allow customers the option to decline.
